John San Filippo

Owner/Head Coach

  • CrossFit Level-1
  • Russian Kettlebell Challenge Certified Instructor
  • USOC SafeSport Trained

John discovered the sport of CrossFit as a 17-year-old by stumbling across the CrossFit Games on ESPN but wouldn’t step foot into a CrossFit gym for the first time until 5 years later.

After a high-school career that culminated in being named an All-American in wrestling, John attended Wesleyan University, where he played football and wrestled. After his collegiate athletic career was cut short by two shoulder surgeries, he was introduced to CrossFit as a workout regimen by one of his friends.

While recovering from his second surgery, he started CrossFit, and began an individualized program. The physical therapist on staff at his gym worked in conjunction with the coaches to provide him with the proper progressions and rehabilitation from his surgery to ensure that his repaired shoulders would function properly. This experience convinced him that CrossFit can play a vital role in helping overcome injuries and dysfunction to lead a more fulfilling life. It also fostered a passion for helping others experience the liberation of gaining new strength and ability through physical movement. John is excited to share that passion with the Front Range Community.

In addition to coaching responsibilities at Front Range CrossFit, John is responsible for new members and community development. He is especially motivated by helping someone learn the skills necessary to enjoy CrossFit safely. Feel free to reach out to him with feedback, ideas, comments, and questions.

When he’s not at Front Range or working out, John can be found in the mountains, on his motorcycle, or wondering how he managed to spend so much money at his local bookstore on such a short trip. He also is pursuing a competitive career in CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting.

Azul Farrera

  • NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (Oct 2016)
  • Crossfit Level 1 (May 2010)
  • ACE Personal Trainer (April 2011)
  • ACT Personal Trainer (Feb 2012)
  • NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist (July 2011)
  • US Airforce Certified Fitness Instructor (April 2016)
  • Enderton Strength Diploma (March 2014)

I started doing CrossFit before I even knew what CrossFit was. While personal training at big globo gyms, I always had a preference for CrossFit style workouts. After being told many times I was training CrossFit style, I finally Googled it and was surprised to find a methodology that incorporated all the things I already loved! This intrigued me, and little by little, I drank the Kool-Aid and started focusing on WODs, weightlifting and powerlifting wholeheartedly. I love the competitive spirit and the unique community that define CrossFit, as well as learning from many friends and great coaches. Above all else, I take the most pride in seeing my athletes accomplish their goals and set new personal records; for some, that may involve
getting their first pull-up or muscle up while others simply learn to move in ways that they never thought possible. Aside from CrossFit, I am a music producer, but that’s a whole other story!

Notable Accomplishments:

  • 2016 USAPL Rocky Mountain State Games 2nd place 56Kg Weight Class
  • Fitness Instructor for Airforce, Army, USMC and Navy 2013-2017 (Buckley AFB)
  • USMC Boot Camp Prep for over 1200 Marines in Colorado 2014-2015
  • Coached Joel Hunt for Sochi 2015 Paralympics

Pete Mentz

FRCF Gymnastics Coach

I found my new home at FRCF in April of 2009. Between the competitive environment and the dozens of sets of still rings, it was love at first sight. As any FRCF’er would tell you, with each passing day I grow more and more appreciative that I am able to train at a gym that has Skip and Jodi Miller at the helm.

I grew up in a household where we spent more time swinging on the high bar than playing ball.  Spent much more time with dad doing dips between chairs than sitting in chairs playing board games.  I received formal gymnastic training from Joe Greco, and later the infamous pair of Mr. Andrew Felice and Abraham “Gabe” Gabriel. Mr. Felice accumulated an overall gymnastic team record at Henninger High School of 212-12 with over 100 consecutive CNYCL victories.

Spent several years coaching under George Sabatka at the longstanding Westside Gymnastic School in central NY.  It would be difficult to count the numerous gymnastic scholarships Mr. Sabatka help students to earn. I’m certain it is well over 100.

Along with a deep respect for my former dedicated coaches, I have found that I have a sincere obligation to pass on what other have taught me.  I can usually be found in the gym, after a WOD, willing to help those who show an interest in developing their gymnastic skills.

Jon found CrossFit in January of 2008 as an efficient way to stay in shape for weekend activities.  Jon has come to value the comradery and support that is such a striking aspect of training at FRCF.

Amy Backel

FRCF Track Coach

Amy competed in a variety of track and field events throughout her career, from high jump and pole vault in high school, to the heptathlon and throws at the University of Oklahoma, and specialized in the javelin for her post-collegiate years.  She was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American, 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials finalist in the javelin, and was the Oklahoma volunteer assistant throws coach in 2011-2012. Amy first began coaching in 2005 and was fortunate to work alongside and learn from some of the most well-respected coaches in the sport including John Powell, Dan John, and Brian Blutreich.  Her years under elite coaches, personal experience in track and field and strength training, and continued research into athlete development and energy system training make her a unique and enthusiastic coach.  She is excited to share her knowledge and passion for all things related to running, jumping, and throwing with the Front Range CrossFit community.
